Tokyo, Sept. 18 -- UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN-CTR) received information related to the study (UMIN000062956) titled 'Effects of Acute Aerobic Exercise on Cognitive Performance' on Sept. 17.
Study Type:
Interventional
Study Design:
Basic Design - Cross-over
Randomization - Randomized
Blinding - Open -no one is blinded
Control - No treatment
Primary Sponsor:
Institute - Chukyo University
Condition:
Condition - Maintenance and improvement of cognitive function
Classification by malignancy - Others
Genomic information - NO
Objective:
Narrative objectives1 - The purpose of this study is to determine whether the effects of acute aerobic exercise on cognitive performance vary depending on cognitive task difficulty. By systematically manipulating task difficulty, we aim to identify the level of task difficulty at which the effects of acute aerobic exercise on cognitive performance are maximized.
Basic objectives2 - Efficacy
Intervention:
Interventions/Control_1 - Participants will complete the exercise condition first, followed by the seated rest condition after an interval. The interval between conditions will generally be 3-14 days, although the second session may be postponed due to unavoidable circumstances such as illness. In the exercise condition, participants will perform 20 minutes of cycling exercise on a cycle ergometer at an intensity corresponding to 60-70% of maximal heart rate while watching a neutral video. Cognitive performance will be assessed using the n-back task before and after exercise. In the seated rest condition, participants will remain seated at rest for 20 minutes while watching a neutral video. Cognitive performance will be assessed using the n-back task before and after the rest period.
Interventions/Control_2 - Participants will complete the seated rest condition first, followed by the exercise condition after an interval. The interval between conditions will generally be 3-14 days, although the second session may be postponed due to unavoidable circumstances such as illness.
Eligibility:
Age-lower limit - 18
years-old
=
Gender - Male and Female
Key inclusion criteria - Healthy male and female university students.
Key exclusion criteria - Individuals who are unable to exercise because of illness or injury, current smokers, and individuals with a history of neurological or psychiatric disorders will be excluded. Female participants with irregular menstrual cycles or severe symptoms of premenstrual syndrome will also be excluded.
Target Size - 40
