Stage: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface emitting laser element which is capable of reducing an emission loss and in which an oscillation threshold current is reduced and a drive current is reduced.SOLUTION: A surface emitting laser element comprises: a first semiconductor layer provided on a translucent substrate; an active layer on the first semiconductor layer; a second semiconductor layer on the active layer; a photonic crystal layer included in the first semiconductor layer and provided with pores disposed in a plane in parallel with the active layer with two-dimensional cyclicity; and a light reflection layer provided on the second semiconductor layer and including a reflection plane. A light emission plane is included on a rear face of the substrate, and the photonic crystal layer includes a diffraction plane which is a wave source in diffracting standing light in a direction orthogonal to the photonic crystal layer. A separation distance between the diffraction plane and the reflection plane is provided in such a manner that a light intensity of interference light generated by interference of first diffracted light which is diffracted from the diffraction plane to the side of the light emission plane and second diffracted light diffracted from the diffraction plane to the side of the light reflection layer and reflected by the reflection plane becomes smaller than a light intensity of the first diffracted light.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A (Grant)
