TOKYO, July 1 -- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan issued the following news release:
On July 1st, commencing at 7:35 a.m. local time, (8:35 p.m. on July 1, JST) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Japan-India Foreign Ministers' Meeting with H.E. Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India during his visit to Washington D.C. to attend the Japan-Australia-India-U.S. (Quad) Foreign Ministers' Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
At the outset, Minister Iwaya expressed his condolences to those who lost their lives in the airplane accident in Gujarat, India last month.
Furthermore, Minister Iwaya stated that the importance of Japan-India cooperation is increasing under the current international situation, and that the concept of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)" which aims to guide the international community towards cooperation rather than division and confrontation, is increasing in significance. Minister Iwaya also stated that Japan would like to actively fulfill its role in ensuring the peace and stability of the international community by utilizing the framework of Japan-Australia-India-U.S., and by coordinating with Minister Jaishankar.
In response, Minister Jaishankar stated that under the Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership, he would like to further deepen bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation in the international arena. Furthermore, both ministers confirmed to continue to cooperate between the two countries in various areas including security, economy, and people-to-people exchanges, with a view to Prime Minister Modi's visit to Japan scheduled for this year.
Both ministers also held discussions on regional issues and efforts by the Quad (Japan-Australia-India-U.S.).
