Outcome of AHEAD50 Invitation Program to Japan on "Climate Change Measures and Marine Conservation for Sustainable Economic Growth"
１．Under the framework of the ASEAN Human Educational Development Scholarship Partners (AHEAD50), the Ministry of the Environment of Japan held the Invitation Program to Japan with the theme of "Climate Change Measures and Marine Conservation for Sustainable Economic Growth" from August 24 to 28, with six officials from the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Centre for Energy.
２．Through lectures from the Ministry of the Environment, relevant ministries and agencies, research institutions, and organizations, as well as site visits, the participants deepened their understanding of climate change countermeasures and initiatives for marine environmental conservation in Japan.
The Ministry of the Environment of Japan has promoted ASEAN-Japan cooperation in the field of climate and environment under the "Strategic Program for ASEAN Climate and Environment (SPACE)" to address the three global crises of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.
Under the framework of the ASEAN Human Educational Development Scholarship Partners (AHEAD50)*, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan held the Invitation Program to Japan from August 24 to 28, with six officials from the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Centre for Energy.
This Invitation Program to Japan was held with the theme of "Climate Change Measures and Marine Conservation for Sustainable Economic Growth," to contribute to the smooth implementation of ASEAN-Japan cooperation projects in the field of climate and environment, in particular to deepen the understanding of the following initiatives:
・ Initiatives to enhance climate change mitigation, adaptation and transparency
・ Efforts to achieve decarbonization and economic growth simultaneously
・ Marine environmental conservation efforts, including measures to address marine plastic pollution
The participants attended lectures and meetings on these initiatives from the Ministry of the Environment, relevant ministries and agencies, research institutions, and organizations. In addition, they visited Ota Incineration Plant, which effectively utilizes heat energy generated from garbage incineration. They also visited the National Institute for Environmental Studies to learn about environmental policies and relevant technologies of Japan, including Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT), Asia-Pacific Integrated Assessment Model (AIM), and Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform (AP-PLAT), enhancing their understanding of Japan's initiatives. Moreover, they exchanged views on ASEAN-Japan cooperation in the field of climate and environment.
* AHEAD50 (ASEAN Human Educational Development Scholarship Partners) is an invitation program launched on the occasion of the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in 2023. The purpose of this program is to provide promising officials of the ASEAN Secretariat and other related organizations with an opportunity to learn about policies, systems, and positions of Japan, thereby strengthening capabilities of the ASEAN Secretariat through human resource development and enhancing smooth cooperation with Japan.
