Outcomes of the 2026 UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF 2026)
1.The 2026 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (herein referred to as "HLPF 2026") was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA, from July 7 to 15, 2026. The forum reviews progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) led by the UN.
2.A side event organized by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan was held on July 14, titled "Bridging Science, Policy, and Practice to Address the Triple Planetary Crisis: Strengthening Synergies for the SDGs and a Sustainable Post-2030 Future." TSUJI Kiyoto, State Minister of the Environment of Japan, participated in the event and delivered remarks on the importance of synergistic approaches and other matters.

In the "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015, the HLPF is positioned as a forum for global review of implementation of the Agenda, and every year the status of implementation is followed up by selecting multiple areas among the 17 goals of the SDGs.
At HLPF 2026, reviews were conducted of SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy), SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the goals). A Ministerial Declaration, for which Japan also participated in discussions, was adopted on the last day of the forum.

Given the launch of the "Asia-Pacific Synergies Report" last month, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan held this event with the Republic of Panama and relevant organizations to discuss leveraging synergies for addressing the "triple planetary crisis" of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
State Minister TSUJI stressed the importance of the "Asia-Pacific Synergies Report," the growing international momentum on promoting synergies, and introduced good synergistic practices in Japan.
The event also featured an explanation of this report and shared the latest international trends on the promotion of synergies at UN Environment Assemblies and UNESCAP. Lively discussions took place among a diverse range of stakeholders, including representatives from national governments, international organizations, academics, youth, the private sector and others, on putting synergistic approaches into practice and the direction of future efforts.
State Minister TSUJI had bilateral meetings with representatives of (in alphabetical order) Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Canada, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Haiti, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Panama, South Africa, Switzerland, Tuvalu, and also with representatives of New York City, financial institutions and others, exchanging views with each of them on climate action and circular economies.
